The Penobscot Experimental Forest (PEF) is located in the towns of Bradley and Eddington in east-central Maine, about 10 miles north of the city of Bangor. The PEF thus serves as an important and unique source of information about the ecology and silviculture of mixed-species northern conifers. Research on the PEF is critical to forest. Silviculture is the practice of controlling the growth, relative to single-species or mixed-species conifer forest. Thinning greatly influences the ecology and micro-meteorology of the stand, lowering the inter-tree competition for water. The removal of any tree from a stand has repercussions on the remaining trees both above-ground and.

ogy and silviculture. Understanding the regeneration ecology of the oaks is para-mount to silviculturists because of wide-spread difficulties in regenerating and thus sustaining oak forests.

The second section comprises three chapters covering site productivity and stand development. An understanding of the productive capacity of oak forests is. Mixed-species forests usually exhibit greater biological diversity than single-species forests (Pretzsch et al., ).

Tree mixture in a stand may increase ecosystem functioning and enhance. Much of the world's forested land is dominated by mixed-species stands. Understanding the complex structure and dynamics of these mixtures is a necessary step in the process of formulating appropriate silvicultural systems for their management.

David M. Smith, Professor Emeritus of Silviculture at Yale University, has devoted much of his career to the study of the structure, development, and. In research and teaching the department deals with silviculture and forest ecology of the temperate zones.

The central objective of silviculture is to shape and manage forest ecosystems in view of the aims of private forest landowners and the legislator, so that one or several forest functions can be maintained in a sustainable way.

There is a rapid rate of forest clearance in many tropical countries. This problem is becoming more serious as the rising world population increases demand for fuelwood and timber. The reduced area of forest must be treated so as to produce the highest possible sustained yield of suitable timber compatible with protecting the environment and water supplies, conserving wild life, enhancing.

The Third Edition has been modified to approach forest ecology and silviculture from a national coterminous perspective rather than from a concentration on the Northeast region of the United States. It is with pride that we publish the Third Edition of Introduction to Forest Ecology and Silviculture.
